Common IELTS Spelling Traps (and How to Stop Making Them)
The most commonly misspelled words in IELTS Writing and how to remember the correct spelling. Includes examiners' most-penalised errors.
In IELTS Writing, spelling is assessed under Lexical Resource. Consistent spelling errors signal limited vocabulary control and lower your band. The good news: most candidates make the same errors repeatedly.

British vs American Spelling
IELTS accepts both British and American spelling — but you must be consistent within one answer. Do not mix British and American forms in the same essay.

Homophones That Trap Candidates
- affect (verb: to influence) vs effect (noun: a result) — "pollution affects health" / "the effect of pollution"
- their (possessive) vs there (location) vs they're (they are)
- its (possessive) vs it's (it is)
- principle (a belief/rule) vs principal (main, or head of a school)
- complement (to complete) vs compliment (to praise)
- stationary (not moving) vs stationery (paper and pens)

How to Fix Spelling Errors Permanently
- Write the correct spelling 5 times by hand — physical muscle memory works
- Create a personal error log and review it before each practice session
- Learn the Latin or Greek root: "bene" (benefit, beneficial), "dict" (predict, contradict)
- Use AI marking feedback to identify your specific recurring errors
- Never rely on autocorrect — the real exam has none
